Confused with the different types of boilers available to you…?

There are a lot of options out there and it can be confusing to know which boiler is right for you.
The last thing you want to do is install a whole new system and then realise you’re all trying to shower at the same time and fighting over who draws the short straw and ends up with a cold shower. We’ve all been there at some point in life…

It’s important to know what you currently have, why it doesn’t work for you and what you want to achieve from a new boiler. Then consider your budget and time frame.

Combi Boilers are one of the easiest and most common boiler to fit.

The most popular type of boiler is the combi boiler (combination boiler). Primarily because they can usually be installed quickly and easily. Plus, they are compact and can fit into cupboards and small spaces, while heating water instantly; so they are convenient.

Pro’s

Lower running costs
Efficient
Compact and avoids the need for a hot water cylinder
Water is heated instantly as required
Easy to maintain
Clean, safe drinking water

Con’s

If your boiler breaks down, there is no immersion heater, so you will be without heating and hot water
Water pressure is set at mains pressure, and often you are unable to have a power shower
Not ideal for homes with more than one bathroom

Conventional Boilers are ideal for larger families requiring multiple water outlets at the same time.

Larger homes, properties with multiple bathrooms, bigger families, or traditional houses often choose Conventional boilers. Conventional boilers require a hot water cylinder and a cold water tank, which can be problematic in small properties as they do take up quite a bit of space.

Conventional boilers store both hot and cold water, providing a constant supply of water and is not reliant on mains water pressure.

Pro’s

Suitable for properties where mains water pressure is low
Multiple faucets can run at the same time and not affect each other
Compatible with old systems

Con’s

It takes time for the water to heat up
You can use up all the hot water and then need to wait for it to reheat
Requires a lot of space
Complicated to install

System Boilers should be considered if you are planning a loft conversion.

Similar to Conventional boilers, System boilers store water in a cylinder, but doesn’t require a water tank. System boilers are more compact than Conventional Boilers, but are capable of supplying a large amount of water simultaneously.

Pro’s

Saves space as doesn’t require a water tank
Allows multiple faucets to be used at the same time
Compatible with solar panels
Economical and reactive

Con’s

It takes time for the water to heat up
You can use up all the hot water and then need to wait for it to reheat
Cylinder needs to be well insulated to be effective

These are the main three, but there are other options out there for you; still unsure of what boiler is right for you, your home and your needs? No problem. We can help you decide which solution is perfect for you and run through all the associated costs and the installation process.
